Wedding Program

While unpacking and setting up my studio this week, I discovered one of my friend’s wedding programs.  I was a bridesmaid in Carter’s wedding in May of 2003 when I was in Architecture School.  Earlier that year, she asked me to make a drawing of the church where she would be married to be used on the cover of her program.  At the time, I had no idea what a beautiful design for the program that she had in mind.  This little book could not be more precious.  Only 2-3/4″ x 5″ in size, it fits perfectly into the palm of your hand, allowing one to flip with ease through the pages of information about the wedding party, family, ceremony and readings.  It just begs for you to tuck it into your clutch or coat pocket for safekeeping.  And that I did.  I love that she had the image printed in a dark blue ink on a creamy ecru paper, fitting with the colors of her wedding.

The image was originally 8″ x 10″ and drawn in black and white on vellum.  I had it matted and framed for her wedding gift.  What I love most about this story is that the church, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia, is also where Carter’s parents were married.  Being the hopeless romantic that I am, I imagine Carter some day giving the framed drawing of the church to one of her sons because he, too, is about to be wed there!

[my home today:  Still in Charleston, in the Bunker.  It's hot, and this one old window unit from the 70s is not cutting it!]

Isn’t it so pretty? I have it hanging in my studio. I am also convinced that drawings look a million times better when they are reduced to 1/10th of the original size!

I kept that program as well and have shared the design with special friends here that are looking for ideas. I’ve always loved Carter’s wedding program!
